Maintaining Filter Performance
What kind of maintenance schedule is ideal for filtering systems?
Apply the rule of four to keep your filtration system operating at peak efficiency.
Rule 1: Daily inspection – Verify that extraction devices/nozzles/enclosures/hoses are in place and correctly positioned. Check the extractor to make sure it is running.
Rule 2: Weekly Inspection – Supervisors should inspect the extraction devices, nozzles, enclosures, and hoses to ensure that they are in good physical condition and that the system is operating correctly. They should also check for any alterations (parts added or removed) or damage.
Rule 3: Monthly Inspection – Check for obstructions and indications of dust or vapour/gas/odor carryover by disconnecting the hoses. Verify that the fan is operating smoothly. Appropriate PPE should be worn.
Rule 4: Yearly Inspection – It is advised to do an annual service that includes these routine examinations in addition to an assessment of the extractor motor, electrics, and filter quality. To avoid dust accumulation and potential unit overheating, the cooling inlets and outlets should be cleaned. Any filters that were not changed in the previous 12 months should be replaced; the part numbers for replacement filters are located on the filters that are installed in your system.
Can I perform my own testing and maintenance?
Avoid the temptation of doing things yourself; only certified maintenance professionals are allowed to test and replace components. Unauthorised repairs or the use of unapproved replacement filters might harm the extractor unit and invalidate the warranty provided by the manufacturer.
Is there a formal inspection and compliance requirement for my extraction system?
It's advisable to look into your local regulations since various locations may have different requirements for period-based LEV system testing. For instance, in the UK, this must be performed by a qualified engineer with approval who will evaluate airflow, pressure, control, and the efficiency of LEV systems.
